EE Ph.D. Program Objectives

 Program Objectives:

The major objectives of the Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas Tech University are:
1.      Train research oriented electrical engineers through exposure to original research in several areas of concentration and relevant course work.

2.      Place graduates in university teaching and research, national laboratories and standards organizations, and industrial research and development.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers students the opportunity of graduate study under the direction of faculty members in an atmosphere of enthusiasm for learning. Master’s and doctoral degrees are awarded to students completing a comprehensive program of courses, examinations, and thesis or dissertation. Courses provide breadth and depth of knowledge; thesis and dissertation projects are an important expression of creative research activity. A non-thesis option is available for master’s students.
The master’s degree program prepares students for successful professional careers based on a broad foundation, together with specialized technical expertise, in electrical engineering. The doctoral degree program prepares students for engineering-based leadership roles in society involving the solution of important technological problems and the advancement and dissemination of knowledge.

Typical Degree Program

Due to the wide breadth of focus areas and specialization degree plans differ greatly between programs. With the thesis based MSEE and the Ph. D. programs, the program of study is developed jointly between the student and the committee with a large degree of guidance by the student’s thesis or dissertation advisor. The department requires a single tools course that may be satisfied by ECE 5371 Engineering Analysis or by a graduate level course in statistical analysis as offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. A typical program for the Ph. D. with an emphasis in semiconductors is shown below.

  • ECE 5314 Solid State Devices
  • ECE 5366 Testing of Digital Systems
  • ECE 5381 Intro to Semiconductor Processing
